Because I know: that\u2019s a fairytale. Working from home can be seriously challenging \u2013 especially when you\u2019re self-employed. It takes self-discipline, clarity, structure. And sometimes, a whole lot of patience when a beautifully planned day suddenly falls apart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Many people realized this during COVID, when everyone suddenly had to work from home. It became clear: remote work doesn\u2019t run on autopilot. It requires focus, self-motivation \u2013 and above all, strong self-leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I also remember times when I turned red whenever someone said, <i>\u201cIf it feels that relaxed, it\u2019s not real work.\u201d<\/i> And I actually started wondering if I was maybe too easygoing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">But let\u2019s be honest: where does this belief come from, that work always has to feel hard and exhausting? That we can only be proud if we collapse into bed at night completely drained?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">\u2192 I looked into this question. (Spoiler: it has to do with some very old ideas \u2013 more on that later.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">In this article, I\u2019ll share how I structure my day in the home office without sinking into chaos. How I create space for exercise, family, me-time, and new ideas for my business. The reality? It\u2019s more like a frantic game of Tetris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">My to-do list might have three clear tasks \u2013 and suddenly a potential new client calls with an exciting project that <i>of course<\/i> needs to start yesterday. Another project that seemed almost done turns out to be way more complex. Then there\u2019s a random call or tech glitch that steals an hour before the day even really starts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Add personal life \u2013 school holidays, a family birthday, or the garden calling \u2013 and everything goes off track. My beautiful weekly plan becomes a patchwork of rescheduled appointments and \u201cI\u2019ll do it later\u201d notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I\u2019ll be honest: I love my freedom. But it also challenges me. Because no one but me makes sure I stay focused. There\u2019s no team lead chasing deadlines, no office lights turning off at 6 PM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>Freedom without structure?<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">That\u2019s like driving without a steering wheel. Things that energize me, ground me, and make sure I\u2019m not just functioning, but actually living.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><i>\u201cYou are your best asset. Take care of yourself.\u201d<\/i> \u2013 Unknown<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>Movement.<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I need it to get into the day \u2013 physically and mentally. 15\u201320 minutes of yoga, a walk, or just some stretching with music is usually enough. The main thing: I don\u2019t dive headfirst into the to-do chaos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>Time with my family.<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I work from home \u2013 but that doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m always present. That\u2019s why I try to block quality time, with no laptop, no phone, no multitasking. Doesn\u2019t always work \u2013 but more often than not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>Room for ideas.<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I love planning, brainstorming, and creating. That requires space \u2013 little creative islands where nothing is expected except dreaming and thinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><b>Me-time.<\/b><b><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">And then there\u2019s the time that often gets lost: time just for me. Meeting friends, reading, listening to music, staring into space. These aren\u2019t luxuries \u2013 they\u2019re necessary. Without them, I lose touch with myself \u2013 and everything else stops working too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">To create space for all this, I\u2019ve set up a few personal anchors:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">A weekly CEO day to work <i>on<\/i> my business instead of just <i>in<\/i> it.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Buffer times in my calendar that I <i>don\u2019t<\/i> schedule \u2013 for the unexpected or just to breathe.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">And most importantly: I don\u2019t plan at 100% capacity. Some days everything falls apart. No workout, CEO day gets rescheduled, me-time gets scrapped. No boss tells me what to do or when. No fixed schedule, no time clock. And no safety net.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">If I\u2019m short on projects, it\u2019s on me to reach out to new clients or refine my offers. If I feel like I\u2019m missing something \u2013 whether it\u2019s technical know-how, strategy, or inspiration \u2013 it\u2019s my job to educate myself. Not someday \u2013 regularly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">And working from home takes that self-responsibility to the next level. You need to be well-organized. Drifting through the day with no plan? Forget it. That\u2019s a one-way ticket to burnout or failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">No one gently reminds you to stay focused. No one says, \u201cHey, don\u2019t forget your accounting. The deadline\u2019s coming. And remember that pitch you were going to finish?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">It\u2019s all on me. Every day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">So much for the pajama fairytale and Dolce Vita vibe. And still \u2013 I wouldn\u2019t trade it for anything right now. That doesn\u2019t count as real work.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><i><\/i><\/span><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><i>\u201cYou can\u2019t go for a walk in broad daylight \u2013 while everyone else is in the office!\u201d<\/i><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">I spent a long time wondering where this came from \u2013 that constant pressure that work only counts if it\u2019s hard. If it drains you. If you collapse into bed at night feeling like you earned your place in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><i>\u201cDon\u2019t confuse activity with productivity. Spoiler: It\u2019s not a personal flaw \u2013 it\u2019s cultural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">Our society is shaped by a work ethic born during the Industrial Revolution. Back then, working hard meant being virtuous. Taking a break meant being lazy. And with the Protestant work ethic, that idea was even moralized: work as purpose, as proof of discipline, as duty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">No wonder we often feel guilty when work feels easy \u2013 or when we plan time for ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span style=\"color: #003366;\">But here\u2019s the truth: just because it feels easy doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s worth less. I\u2019m not perfectly organized \u2013 but I have my anchors. And I allow myself to be flexible, to adjust, to shift things around.
